Jenny O'Leary
Patient Testimonial
Jenny O'Leary isn't a doctor, nurse, or medical professional, but she knows the in’s and out's of diabetes only too well. Jenny's testimonial will astonish you as she shares her amazing story of her battle with diabetes. Believe me, our stories don't hold a candle to the struggles Jenny has endured. Hers is a hard road that she was willing to share to help others on their path to battling diabetes.
Jenny has been a type 1 diabetic since 1975, age 10, when it was discovered that her blood sugar was >600! She had a difficult time coping with her diabetes as a child. From age 14-17 she rebelled by not taking shots, eating candy, etc. It wasn’t until she was 18 that the glucose test kits were available. At age 24, she suffered a terrible accident that shattered her leg and almost lost it through amputation.
The lack of inactivity, and 15 surgeries, from age 24—30, caused her blood sugars to fluctuate from 20 to 600. At age 30, she was hospitalized several times with stomach problems. Eventually she was diagnosed with Gastro Perisis, a form of neuropathy where the nerves in the stomach are damaged and cannot tell the stomach to feel food, process it, etc. Food just sits in your stomach and you literally starve! Over a 4 year period of time, she was in the hospital 80% of the time—no quality of life.
Because of the late detection, the gastric pacemaker they inserted did not help, and she ended up with a permanent tube in her stomach and colon. She manually has to feed herself food and meds. This ravaged her body causing anemia, vomiting, malnourishment and eventually gave her a heart attack!
Other problems that had were kidney problems, fragile bones, and cateracs. She had also suffered neuropathy in her eyes and had to cauterize the bleeding in the blood vessels. She now has to check her sugar 6-8 times a day.
Jenny warned that stress has a big affect on your blood sugar.
Jenny used “Diabetes America” in the Woodlands (Dr. Young) and is very happy with her.
