Margaret Gulledge, OTR
Exercise and Diabetes
This meeting was an exciting and informative one. Our guest speaker, Margaret Gulledge, OTR, discussed the importance of regular exercise in controlling diabetes. She brought some great handouts from the American Diabetes Association that covered: the top ten benefits of being active, how to get started on a physical activity routine, overcoming common barriers, how much exercise you need, simple stretches, and how to monitor your progress. We even got a demonstration of the three kinds of activities: aerobic exercise, strength training, and flexibility exercises. I found her suggestions of changing some of our daily habits very helpful, such as, parking as far away from the store as possible and walking, take the stairs instead of the elevator, and walking to the neighbors house or the corner store instead of driving. Margaret is easy to talk to and knowledgeable in her area; everyone felt comfortable asking her questions. We hope to see her again!
Margaret also brought flyers advertising the Sittercise class at the YMCA Teen Center at 1216 10th street. This class is Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-11, and best of all IT’S FREE! This is a very low impact exercise class that will get you back on the road to a more healthy ‘you’!
The First Christian Church Board of Directors has graciously voted to allow us to use their meeting rooms for as long as we want, and has offered a larger room for when we grow! Thank you First Christian Church!!
We announced the upcoming HMH Community Education Program “Diabetes and Foot Health”, Tuesday, June 23, 6:30pm, at the HMH Conference Rooms, featuring Dr. Timothy Casperson and Dr. Gurpret Mukker. Please call 291-4255 for reservations.
Thank you Jan McGinty for bringing our refreshments. We forgot to lasso someone for next month, so I will bring the refreshments.
